If your receipt printer isn't printing or is experiencing issues, there are several simple checks you can perform to get it working again.
Follow the steps below to diagnose and fix the most common receipt printer problems:
Check the power and connections
Ensure your receipt printer is powered on and all cables are securely connected. Check the power cable, USB or network cable, and verify the power outlet is working. Look for any indicator lights on the printer to confirm it's receiving power.
Check the paper roll
Open the printer cover and verify that the paper roll is properly installed and not empty. Make sure the paper is feeding correctly and isn't jammed. The paper should pull smoothly when you gently tug on it.
Clear any paper jams
If paper is stuck, open the printer cover and carefully remove any jammed paper. Close the cover firmly until you hear it click into place. Some printers require you to press the feed button after clearing a jam.
Test print a receipt
Most receipt printers have a feed button that prints a test receipt or advances the paper. Press and hold this button for a few seconds to verify the printer is mechanically working.
Restart the printer and till
Turn off both your receipt printer and till system. Wait 30 seconds, then turn the printer on first, followed by the till. This can resolve communication issues between the devices.
Check printer settings
Verify that your till is set to print to the correct printer. Check your system settings to ensure the receipt printer is selected as the default printing device.
